Instagib is a Teeworlds mod where you use the rifle to kill a tee in one shot.

Instagib

It does not officially belongs to the game, but in comparison to other mods it is very much played in DM and CTF. It is also one of the few mods where clans only train on the mod, and for a huge part ignore the normal gameplay. It is also criticized for only requiring a fraction of the skill involved in regular gameplay and thereby giving a false impression of skill. For these and other reasons some professional regular players have a negative opinion about instagib. Despite the critique of these individuals instagib remains a very active mod on Teeworlds.

History

The first release of this mod was done by Somerunce on the 23th of March 2008. It were only raw server settings and required manual input to tune the rifle into a one hit kill weapon. On the 3th of June 2008 a new and patched version came out which gave more options and required less manual tuning. It also added an option to add an explosion similar to that of the grenade launcher to the bounced laser, which made it easier to kill or damage other tees. A 1.1 version was soon released which fixed friendly fire being default and the broadcasting of kills, added a killing spree function and tunable spawn protection.

With the release of 0.5.0 there was also a huge demand for the recreation of this mod. Several players replied to this request but Somerunce version has gained the most popularity. The most notable addition to this version where laserjumps, in which the first hit of the laser will cause an explosion similar to that of the grenade launcher but without causing damage. This allows players to gain speed with a single shot and has added a complete new dimension to mod. This function replaced the original explosive laser which has never been very popular besides a few servers. Laserjumps got their critique just as well, especially because it was included as the default setting. With 0.5.1 came also a 2.2 release which fixed some minor issues.

On the 24th of February 2009 ~{MS}~ responded to their victory in the MTC 4v4 instagib tournament with an open letter containing their gratitude to the MTC organization and their views on the future of instagib. This letter spawned an enormous discussion, and gave surge to a wave of suggestions to improve the existing situation which deemed instagib unsuitable mod in comparison to regular gameplay. Critics said that they didn't see the tactical gameplay experience experienced instagib players always talked about, and that they considered regular gameplay to be far more resourceful and inspiring. Instagib players agreed that although instagib is a very nice game mode to play, it could appear to be boring in several of the tournament matches. A lot of suggestions where done of which some will hopefully see the light of day in a future instagib release. These adaptations are especially welcome as the 0.5.0 release has damaged the instagib community with a combination of the "pure server" setting, default laserjumps and a 50:50 community split between 0.4.3 and 0.5.x, mainly as a result of these changes. This has created an ever widening gap between the vanilla and instagib community, which ~{MS}~ hopes to over bridge.

Following these crucial developments Tom94 stepped forward as the answer to this situations. His Freeze mod is a popular adaptation of the traditional instagib gameplay but adds a teamplay element. Shooting a tee will now freeze it in place, requiring his teammates to melt their allies in order to win the game. In April 2009 Tom94 also announced Instagib Plus, which is a totally renewed version of instagib with much more options and many more features.

Tunable options

  • sv_instagib - Set this to 1 to enable instagib. Default: 0
  • sv_instagib_dmg - Set this to 0 to disable damage from hits without bounce. Default: 1
  • sv_instagib_bouncedmg - Set this to 0 to disable damage from hits with bounce. Default: 1
  • sv_instagib_explode - Set this to 1 to enable exploding laser. Default: 0 (1.x release only)
  • sv_broadcast_kills - Set this to 1 to enable broadcasting of the player's kills. Default: 0
  • sv_laserjumps - Set this to 0 to disable the laser from causing an non-hurting explosion. Default: 1 (2.x release only)
  • sv_kills_send - Turn this on to send the player's kills via broadcast to the player. Default: 0
  • sv_protect - Set this to the number of seconds you want spawn protection. The player can't be killed within that time from the spawning. Default: 0
  • sv_spree - Turn this on to enable killing spree messages. Default: 0
  • sv_spree_method - Set this to 1 to send spree msgs via broadcast. If it conflicts with sv_kills_send, the kill send will go first. Default: 0

Maps

Instagib has spawned a number of maps which are considered mostly instagib-only. Normal gameplay on such maps is possible, but not very popular.
